Sufism

"Tasawwuf" or "Sufism" is regarded to be the inner mystical dimension of Islam rather than a separate group. Sufism tries to find out the reality of divine love and experience God directly. "Khaneghah" is the place for Sufis to concentrate on their devoted life. "Sufi" which is the name of Sufism practitioners is an Arabic name that is believed to mean "woolen" referring to the woolen clothes worn by the early mystics. It started to develop in second century of lunar calendar in Islamic lands especially Mesopotamia and flourished during 13th to 16th century.

There exist 370 million Sunni Sufis and 20 million Shiite in the world about 100 sects of which live in Iran. A number of Shiite Sufis live in Iran in the cities of Tehran, Yazd, Mashhad, Kerman, Gonabad, Bojnourd and Borujerd. "Sheikh Safi al-Din Khaneghah in Ardebil is the most prominent Sufi shrine in Iran.
